What happens in a couples massage?
Two therapists work on two people at the same time, in one room, on two tables set side by side. You start together and you finish together. Neither of you waits out front while the other one is on the table.
That timing is the only real difference from booking two separate appointments. The strokes, the pressure and the length of the session are the same as you would get on your own. What changes is that the person you came with is an arm's length away for the entire booking, and that the two of you leave at the same time.
The room
The couples room at 3877 Lebanon Pike holds the two tables side by side, close enough to reach across. Parking is free in the lot outside the door, so you can pull in, walk in together and go straight through to it.
Who works on you
One therapist to each table, and they stay with their own person. Your pressure, your problem areas and any correction you make partway through go to the therapist working on you. Your partner's go to theirs. Nothing about the booking requires the two of you to want the same kind of session.
How much is a couples massage in Hermitage?
It is $160 for 60 minutes, and that figure covers both of you — about $80 each. The shorter booking is $120 for 30 minutes and the longer one is $240 for 90 minutes. Those three lengths are the whole couples line on the menu, and none of them is quoted per person.
Thirty minutes covers backs, shoulders and necks, and not much beyond that. The hour is the one to book if you want a whole body worked without the end being rushed. Ninety minutes adds the half hour that lets a therapist go back over whatever they found the first time.
Two tables, one room, one price. Give it a few days of notice and the rest of it is an ordinary booking.
| Length | Price for two | What the session realistically covers |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | $120 | Back, shoulders and neck for each of you |
| 60 minutes | $160 | Full body at an unhurried pace — the middle length |
| 90 minutes | $240 | Full body with real time spent on the areas you name at the start |
How do you book two people into the same slot?
Book it through Square, or call (615) 835-2603 and say the booking is for two. A couples session needs two therapists free in the same slot, which is a harder thing to line up than one, so notice does more good on this booking than on any other.
Choose the length before you choose the time. A 30, 60 or 90 minute session changes how much of the evening you are giving to it, and it also changes how many slots in the week can hold it.
- Agree the length between you first, so you are booking one thing rather than negotiating at the desk.
- Book on Square or call (615) 835-2603 and say it is a couples booking, not two singles.
- Give a few days of notice where you can, since two therapists have to be free at the same time.
- Park in the lot outside the door — it is free, and it is a few steps from reception.
- Arrive together with a little time in hand, so neither of you starts the session out of breath.
What if one of us wants firm pressure and the other wants light?
Say so at the start, each of you separately. Two therapists means two sets of instructions, and there is no reason for them to match. One table can be taking firm work across the shoulders while the other stays light for the full session, and neither therapist needs to know what the other was asked for.
The mistake worth avoiding is the polite one: deciding partway through that the pressure is wrong and waiting until the end to mention it. A therapist can change what they are doing inside a stroke or two, and cannot change what already happened.
How to ask for what you want
Name a place and give a number. "Upper back and the right side of my neck, and tell me when you have me at about a 6" is something a therapist can act on, while "firm, I suppose" leaves them guessing at a scale only you can see. Correct it out loud once they begin.
NCCIH reports that the risk of harmful effects from massage appears to be low, with rare reports of serious problems such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture, some of them following very vigorous techniques. Pressure that has you bracing or holding your breath has gone past useful, and saying so is the fix.
If firm work is the point of the visit
Deep tissue sits on the menu as its own service at $100 for 60 minutes and $140 for 90, rather than as a request made in the couples room. If slow, heavy work is what one of you came for, raise it when you book instead of at the table, and read our deep tissue massage page first so you know what you are asking for.
Do you talk during a couples massage?
As much or as little as you want. Being in one room is what makes the choice yours at all — book two separate massages and the question never comes up.
Two practical things shape it. The face cradle points your head at the floor for a good part of the session, so conversation across the room takes more effort than it seems like it should. And each therapist is working to their own person's feedback, so anything about pressure is worth saying to the therapist beside you rather than across the gap.
Mayo Clinic Health System describes an hour of massage as lowering cortisol, the hormone the body produces under stress, while releasing serotonin, and makes the point that a session sits alongside standard treatment rather than in place of it. Neither of you has to fill the hour with conversation to get something out of it.
What does the research say about massage and stress?
Less than the marketing does, and mostly for the short term. National survey data reported by NCCIH show that 10.9 percent of U.S. adults used massage therapy in 2022, more than double the 4.8 percent who used it in 2002. Popularity on that scale tells you what people find worth paying for, not what a trial found.
On neck and shoulder pain, the numbers are modest. A 2013 review of 12 studies with 757 participants found massage therapy more helpful for neck and shoulder pain than inactive treatments, though no better than other active ones, and for shoulder pain the benefit was short-term only. A 2016 review of 4 studies run in the United States, with 519 participants, found massage could give short-term relief of neck pain when the sessions were long enough and frequent enough.
Read plainly, that argues for the hour over the half hour if a stiff neck is part of why you are booking, and it argues against treating one session as a course of treatment. If either of you is pregnant, recovering from surgery, or being treated for anything affecting circulation or bone density, ask your own clinician before you book and mention it when you arrive.
Questions people ask
How much is a couples massage in Hermitage, TN?
It is $120 for 30 minutes, $160 for 60 minutes and $240 for 90 minutes, and each price covers both people rather than one. The hour therefore works out at about $80 each. Book on Square or call (615) 835-2603.
Are we in the same room during a couples massage?
Yes. The couples room has two tables set side by side with a walkway between them, and both of you are worked on at the same time by your own therapist. You start together and finish together.
How do we book a couples massage for two people?
Book through Square or call (615) 835-2603 and say the appointment is for two people rather than two separate massages. Because a couples session needs two therapists free in the same slot, a few days of notice helps more here than on a single booking.
Can we each ask for different pressure?
Yes, and it is worth saying so in the first couple of minutes. One therapist works each table and takes instructions only from the person on it, so one of you can have firm work across the shoulders while the other stays light for the whole session.
Do you have to talk during a couples massage?
No. Nobody will prompt you to, and conversation usually falls away once the work starts. The face cradle points your head at the floor for much of the session, which makes talking across the room more effort than it sounds. Anything about pressure is better said to the therapist beside you.
Is there parking at the studio?
Yes, free parking in the lot outside the door at 3877 Lebanon Pike. You can park, walk in together and go straight through to the couples room without hunting for a space or feeding a meter.
What are your hours?
The studio is open 7 days a week. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday run 10 AM to 8 PM, Sunday is 12 to 7 PM, and Tuesday is the short day at 11 AM to 4 PM. Work backwards from closing when you pick the length.
